Leftists Giddy That Georgia U.S. Senate Race Might Deliver ‘The Green New Deal’

Members of a left-leaning environmental group have announced that Georgia’s two U.S. Senate races are the key to them and their political allies in Washington, D.C. enacting the Green New Deal into law.

Members of this group, the Sunrise Movement, announced their intentions late last week.

According to an emailed Sunrise Movement newsletter, members think they can use the Georgia U.S. Senate elections “to transform this country.” The newsletter did not identify which of the four primary U.S. Senate candidates would help them achieve their goals. The Green New Deal, however, is a Democratic Party initiative.

“Everyone has got Georgia on their minds. The power to build a Green New Deal future is in arm’s reach. These races are important to me because I see what Georgia looks like. For too long, this state has been controlled by people who work with fossil fuel executives and lobbyists—not for the people of Georgia. But their power is crumbling and Georgia finally has a chance not only to contribute to the growing demand for a fair America and the Green New Deal, but to build political power toward a vision that is so much bigger than our state alone,” according to the Sunrise Movement’s newsletter.

CASE

“This is why we need you. Since these races are going to decide between kicking off decisive Green New Deal action in 2021 or two more years of waiting, corrupt politicians, fossil fuel executives, and lobbyists will put millions of dollars toward stopping us. We must build this people power in Georgia to stop them instead.”

As reported, U.S. Sen. David Perdue (R-GA) and U.S. Sen. Kelly Loeffler (R-GA) are on the January 5, 2021 ballot for the U.S. Senate against two Democrats, Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock, respectively.

As The Tennessee Star reported last year, New York Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez  (D-NY-14) released the Green New Deal resolution that’s become a central part of the Democratic agenda. The Green New Deal resolution calls for “10-year national mobilizations” to fight global warming.

A separate fact-sheet claims the plan would “mobilize every aspect of American society on a scale not seen since World War II.” That includes getting all our energy needs from “clean, renewable, and zero-emission energy sources” by “dramatically expanding and upgrading existing renewable power sources.”

Ocasio-Cortez’s non-binding resolution calls for a variety of social justice and welfare state goals, including “a family-sustaining wage, adequate family and medical leave, paid vacations and retirement security” and “high-quality health care” benefits for Americans. The resolution also calls for “repairing historic oppression” among certain groups, including minorities, immigrants, women, low-income workers, indigenous people and youth collectively called “frontline and vulnerable communities.”
